Multiwavelength periodicity study of Markarian 501

چکیده
Context. Active Galactic Nuclei are highly variable emitters of electromagnetic waves from the radio to the gamma-ray regime. This variability may be periodic, which in turn could be the signature of a binary black hole. Systems of black holes are strong emitters of gravitational waves whose amplitude depends on the binary orbital parameters as the component mass, the orbital semi-major-axis and eccentricity. Aims. It is our aim to prove the existence of periodicity of the AGN Markarian 501 from several observations in different wavelengths. A simultaneous periodicity in different wavelengths provides evidence for bound binary black holes in the core of AGN. Methods. Existing data sets from observations by Whipple, SWIFT, RXTE, VERITAS and MAGIC have been analysed with the Lomb-Scargle method, the epoch folding technique and the SigSpec software. Results. Our analysis shows a 72-day period, which could not be seen in previous works due to the limited length of observations. This does not contradict a 23-day period which can be derived as a higher harmonic from the 72-day period.

Spectral energy distribution of markarian 501: Quiescent state versus extreme outburst
The very high energy (VHE; E > 100 GeV) blazar Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) has a well-studied history of extreme spectral variability and is an excellent laboratory for studying the physical processes within the jets of active galactic nuclei. However, there are few detailed multiwavelength studies of Mrk 501 during its quiescent state, due to its low luminosity. A short-term multiwavelength study ...

We present multiwavelength observations of the BL Lacertae object Markarian 501 (Mrk 501) in 1997 between April 8 and April 19. Evidence of correlated variability is seen in very high energy (VHE; E * 350 GeV) gray observations taken with the Whipple Observatory g-ray telescope, data from the Oriented Scintillation Spectrometer Experiment of the Compton Gamma Ray Observatory, and quick-look res...

Since September 2005, the Whipple 10 m Gamma-ray Telescope has been used primarily to monitor known TeV AGN. The five Northern Hemisphere blazars that have been previously detected at Whipple, (Markarian 421, H1426+428, Markarian 501, 1ES 1959+650 and 1ES 2344+514) are monitored each night that they are visible. A number of multiwavelength observing campaigns have been undertaken by many collab...
متن کاملVery High Energy Gamma Rays from Markarian 501
During remarkable flaring activity in 1997 Markarian 501 was the brightest source in the sky at TeV energies, outshining the Crab Nebula by a factor of up to 10. Periods of flaring activity each lasting a few days were observed simultaneously by several gamma ray telescopes. Contemporaneous multiwavelength observations in April 1997 show that a substantial fraction of the total AGN power is at ...
